Topic: DDR 1989-11-09
Today is the celebration of 20 years that have passes since they started to take away the wall in Berlin, the old DDR.

It makes me to think of so many walls around the world, like the one they now build in Palestina, the big one in China, the "shame wall" in Spain and so on...
but imagine a town in two pieces and no allowance to meet your relatives on the other side?

Many took all different kinds of ways to try to flee from East Berlin to the west but any died when trying.

Is wall's really a good solution? Walls, guards, weapons and mines?

It touch me to see the 20 year old picture and the happiness when people shaken hands through the wall!

I feel it is wrong when we build up new ones around the world.

Walls and barriers are never welcome to mankind, but they grow up like mushrooms in History and Geography. One of the biggest works of Mankind, the Great Wall in china, was made to keep the foreigners outside, wasn’t it?

Unfortunately I don’t know of any “shame wall” in Spain. Where is it? I’m so curious about it!

The Great Wall of China was build to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from Xiongnu attacks during various successive dynasties.

See, Michael? Walls are there always to protect and to forbid. But we certainly lose something or a lot because of them.

"It touch me to see the 20 year old picture and the happiness when people shaken hands through the wall"

Exactly, Heli. I was in Berlin less than two months before the wall was open and it was a very strange atmosphere when you crossed the "border" in order just to get to another part of Germany. Unfortunately many Germans tend to forget this time.

"Is wall's really a good solution? Walls, guards, weapons and mines?"

You will not find a general answer. The Berlin wall was an instrument to stabilize a dictatorial system. But in other cases a wall or guards - mines are another topic - can be an instrument of defense, like the Chinese wall or the Roman Limes.
